Land and the Original People of Turtle Island

I’ve lived most of my life in Ontario, and have been greatly impacted by the landscape of this province as well as the diverse groups of cultures and community and individuals who reside here.

Toronto/Tkaronto was originally (and is still) cared for  by the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the Huron-Wendat people. This land sits within the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement to peaceably share, care, and protect the Great Lakes region.

I also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit who, just as all Indigenous nations, continue to fight for their treaty and water rights.
